I came upon this really inspiring comic, its something to think about if you start comparing yourself to better artists that you want to be like and feel depressed!

Your passion needs your time

This is taken from Comicbook artist Henrike Dijkstra

Passion

An intense desire or enthusiasm for something.

- Cambridge dictionary Passion. Everyone knows this word. The excerpt from the dictionary above is just one of many different definitions of the term.
What a lot of people don`t know is that the word “passion” actually comes from the Latin root “pati” which means “suffering” or “enduring.” This word was, for example, used to describe the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross to save the world.

At first it might seem that over time the word evolved into meaning something completely different than suffering. But I find it a strangely appropriate word for one of our modern day definitions: “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something”

Self-Criticism, how do you know when you're finished?

I love this point in a painting when it's more than potential, but I've committed to something. The next stage that I like is when the canvas is totally covered with paint. Not finished, just no white spots. After all,
you have to do something before you can do something.
If paintings aren't finished but just abandoned, my very favorite stage is when someone adopts it. Then they can worry about whether it's finished.
This when-are-you-done topic was stimulated by a discussion about self-criticism.
Being an artist takes courage. After all, taste in art is subjective. What one person might like another might gag at. I just think it's impolite to gag at your own work.
I used to. I told this story at the meeting, but I'm not sure everyone heard it, so here it is again.
A number of years ago I painted a seascape, a plein air watercolor done on a step cliff along the Carmel-Monterey 17-Mile Drive.

I looked at the magnificent scene and compared it to my finished work. "Crap, absolute crap," I said.
Just then, a gust picked up my board, painting and all and carried it down a level from where I'd been working.  I reached for it, as another gust moved it further away. I scrambled again, as a third gust lifted the heavy board. As it hung precariously, I made an athletic dive and captured it, just before it blew into the ocean, hundreds of feet below.
Hugging my painting I looked toward the heavens and almost heard the lesson.
If it was such crap, wouldn't you have let it go?

Wacom Inkling

For those of us who have not tried using a Wacom tablet, or for those that would like a new tool.....eh gadget to play with, Wacom Inkling might be a great bridge from pen to stylus.
http://www.wacom.com/en/us/creative/inkling  Using you're own sketch pad, the Inkling "records" everything you draw and sends it right to your computer.  I like this idea very much for two reasons. 1. I like to sketch with a pen. 2. I don't want to invest in expensive software and hardware and then never use them.  This might be the perfect introduction to creating "digital" work for me. It's not very expensive and hardly intimidating.  Will have to get a demo to fully appreciate it.  What do you think?

Happy New Year!  2014

Happy New Year!  We had a wonderful first meeting of the year!  Lots of great art and talk!

After the meeting Bob McMahon sent a link to one of the subjects we were talking about.  Here's Bob's note and a link to the article:   I found this and it seems to be relevant to a discussion we had today about when a painting is actually finished. Some good insights here.

I took photos of the table and some of the artists chatting for the New Year meeting, so here are a few pics.
